Proper Brushing & Flossing

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is paramount, and brushing and flossing play vital roles in this routine. While professional dental cleanings twice a year remove plaque, tartar, and debris, effective home care methods are equally essential. Proper brushing and flossing not only enhance oral health but also contribute to a sparkling smile and help prevent serious dental issues.

The significance of proper brushing and flossing:

Tooth decay, a leading cause of tooth loss, is prevented by eradicating plaque acids that erode enamel. Regular home hygiene methods are effective in halting this decay process.

Periodontal disease, causing tooth loss and gum and jawbone recession, is thwarted by removing toxins in plaque. Brushing and flossing diligently prevents periodontal problems.

Bad breath often results from food particles between teeth, which can be eliminated with regular brushing and flossing, promoting a healthier mouth and fresher breath.

Stains, caused by factors like smoking and coffee, are minimized through regular removal with proper brushing and flossing, preventing them from becoming permanent.

The Proper Way To Brush

Brush teeth at least twice daily, ideally in the morning and before bedtime. Use a small toothbrush with soft, rounded-end bristles, no older than three months. The head should access all areas of the mouth without harming the gums. The ADA recommends electric toothbrushes, especially those with rotating or oscillating heads, for their effectiveness.

Steps for proper brushing:

Flossing removes plaque from interdental spaces, crucial in preventing periodontal disease. Interdental regions are challenging to reach with a toothbrush, necessitating daily flossing. Floss type and flavor are your choice, as long as it is comfortable and easy to use.

Steps for proper flossing:

  • Cut an 18-inch piece of floss.
  • Wrap ends around fingers, leaving 2-3 inches between.
  • Gently slide floss between teeth toward the gum line.
  • Curve floss in a U-shape around each tooth, moving beneath the gum line.
  • Carefully move floss up and down to remove plaque.
  • Avoid popping floss between teeth, which may inflame the gums.
