Types of Drugs Used for Sedation

We can’t wait to meet you!

The drugs utilized for sedation in dentistry come in various types. Most of these drugs fall under the category of benzodiazepines, which are effective in reducing anxiety, muscle spasms, insomnia, and seizures. Each medication has a different half-life, indicating the duration of its effects. The choice of drug depends on the estimated length of the dental procedure to ensure optimal effectiveness.

Some common sedatives used include:

  • Valium®: This sedative, known for its amnesic properties and long half-life, is suitable for lengthy and complex procedures.
  • Halcion®: Primarily used for insomnia, Halcion is an effective sedative with amnesic properties and a short half-life, making it suitable for shorter procedures.
  • Ativan®: Best known for anxiety reduction, Ativan has amnesic properties and a medium half-life, making it suitable for treatments lasting less than two hours.
  • Versed®: With the shortest half-life, Versed is used for visits lasting less than 30 minutes. It reduces anxiety similar to nitrous oxide.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding sedation dentistry, feel free to discuss them with your dentist.
